Duterte First Impeachment Complaint: Senators to Hold Judgement On Impeachment, Leni Robredo Denies Accusation


Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano filed impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte. The senators will be the one to hold judgement. However, several of them say there is "'no compelling reason" to impeach the President.




Apparently, several senators are siding with the current President. On Thursday, March 16, senators said the impeachment complaint against the current President is part of the constitutional process.

In a text message sent to reporters, Senatir Panfilo Lacson stated, "First, it is the constitutional way of booting out a sitting president, so [the] Magdalo party list should not be criticized, much less mocked, for filing the impeachment complaint. At least this time they are not engaging in another Oakwood type of adventure."

Aside from that, Lacson added, "All I can say is, without necessarily associating myself with them in the matter of impeaching [Duterte], my simple message is, good luck to them."




One of the senators who finds there's "no compelling reason" on the filed impeachment complaint is Joseph Victor Ejercito, a known Duterte ally. He said Duterte's time is different from the Arroyo's time.

According to Ejercito, Arroyo's legitimacy was in question because of  electoral fraud in the 2004 polls., while Duterte given the mandate by the Filipino people. This is why for him, there is no compelling reason to file a complaint.

Meanwhile, Liberal Party ally Vice President Leni Robredo is accused of being part of destabilization plot. The VP denied the allegation,
