It's not everyday someone turns 72. And for President Rodrigo Duterte's birthday, he woke in a very pleasant surprise.
Seven of his grandchildren - including the newborn Marko Digong, nicknamed Stonefish, the youngest son of the presidential daughter and Mayor Sarah Duterte-Carpio - literally barged his bedroom and woke him up at around 2 p.m. to greet him a happy birthday.
The grandchildren - Baby Stonefish, Sharky, Stingray, Uno, Yair, Sabina and Yulia - were joined by youngest daughter Veronica and son-in-law Manases Carpio in greeting the President.
The President was still in his black shorts and white shirt when the children woke him up and sang "Happy birthday" while taking turns kissing him.
There was no special party for his birthday but a private dinner with the family was scheduled later in the night.
Sara posted on her Facebook account, "Happy birthday Digong. Padala humba diri sa balay karong paniudto. Salamat. (Send humba here at home for lunch. Thank you)" and wishing her father good health. She also posted a photo of her carrying Stonefish beside her father during the baby's baptism last March 16.
Presidential son and vice mayor Paolo vowed to support his father as he carries out his task as President of the country.
The youngest son Sebastian, however, refused to give any message for his father as he would not want his old man to rant against him in public again.
Ordinary folks were also seen outside his residence, bringing bananas and native chickens as gifts.
Last Monday, the President received two birthday gifts from Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua during his visit at the Presidential Guest House in Panacan, Davao City. The official photos revealed that one of the gifts was a painting of a rooster, symbolizing the President's animal sign in the Chinese zodiac.
The President was also delighted to have another painting of him with his partner Honeylet AvaceƱa and their daughter Veronica, nicknamed Kitty.
