Erap Quits Smoking, Orders Smoking Ban in Manila

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada orders on Monday, February 13, to strictly enforce ban on smoking in Manila City. 

The former President ordered the ban after pronouncement that he finally stopped his personal smoking habits.

The city's public information office added that Estrada wants his people to "follow his example."

The national government earlier poised the plan for a nationwide smoking ban. 



In a study made by the Department of Labor and Employment, the ban may theoretically cut tobacco consumption by half and will not have a major effect on employment. 

Tobacco industry only makes up 1% of country's employment, DOLE study noted.
