Mayor Urges Residents of 405 Homes to Evacuate Over Fear of 'The Big One'

The city government of Makati gave two choices for residents whose houses are situated on top of the West Valley Fault line, evacuate now or stay at your own risk.

Mayor Abby Binay on Wednesday encourages affected residents of Comembo, Rizal, Pembo and East Rembo to leave their houses.

Those places, apparently, sit on top of the West Valley Fault that may result to massive loss of lives and damage to properties as soon as a strong earthquake hit greater Manila area.

The city mayor promises to provide financial aid for relocation but not to buy them property.

“We will not expropriate. The city will not buy your property; we will just provide help because you’re affected," Binay said.

She also noted that families who refuse to vacate their places must submit a waiver accepting their risks to extreme destruction.

Renovation and rebuilding on the said areas will also be prohibited as building permits will never be available.

The four barangays were traversed in a 3-kilometer stretch of the fault line in the city, based on a survey last 2014.

All the 405 houses were erected on the danger zone located 5 meters away from the fault line on both sides.
