It had been announced on Monday that instead of calling the anniversary of the declaration of martial law as a holiday, President Rodrigo Duterte said that September 21, Thursday, would be called as a Day of Protest.
"September 21 is not a holiday, I have declared it a day of protest. ‘Yung gusto mag protesta laban sa gobyerno, laban sa pulis, laban sa military o lahat, magbabaan kayo lahat," said President Duterte.
In a press conference, he also invited those who wanted to protest against the government to come out saying, “Sabay tayo mag protesta sa gobyerno natin,” and encouraged everyone to have a peaceful yet meaningful protest since “the Army and police will remain in barracks except for traffic policemen.
He also said that there will also be protests from some government official who are crying over low salaries and lack of allowances.
When asked if classes and government work will be suspended on that day, he answered, “'Walang trabaho. O kung gusto niyong taga-gobyerno, merong mga unyon-unyon d'yan, they should participate."
Suspension of classes nationwide on September 21 was still unclear since the President had not yet signed the document suspending the government work and classes, said a source from the Office of the Executive Secretary.
