President Rodrigo Duterte expresses willingness to forget tax evasion case of Mighty Corporation if the latter pay doubles the excise tax the cigarette manufacturer failed to remit.
"I will forget about the printing of 1.5 billion worth of fake stamps. I will agree to this: Pay double, I'll forget about it. Anyway, I assure him that if someone in power pursues the case, I can always pardon him," Duterte said in his local language.
In a statement on Thursday at Davao del Sur, the president offers the payment of P3 billion to pardon Mighty Corporation president Alex Wongchukin.
"He offered 1.5, which is definitely unacceptable to me. There was deceit. So, he needs to give double. He should offer three billion," he added.
He noted that Wongchukin must give the money directly to the Department of Health to utilize it for the rehabilitation of hospitals in Basilan, in Jolo and in Manila.
In this light, he finally agrees to the lawyers of Mighty that the case would be tax evasion instead of falsification.
Tax cases, as he explained, could be settled or compromised even if the failure in payment of tax is intentional or not.
Previously, Duterte ordered the arrest of Mighty Corp's president for alleged economic sabotage.
