Chikungunya Outbreak Declared in Cotabato Province

Following a rise in the number of admitted patients diagnosed with Chikungunya, a province in Cotabato was declared under outbreak.

The Rural Health Unit (RHU) of M'lang, Cotabato apparently has recorded at least 50 individuals that were already inflicted by the mosquito-driven disease since last week.

Expressing fear that number of patients may swell in number,  Dr. Glecerio “Jun” Sota, town health officer,  reminds public that the disease brought by Aedes mosquitoes is not as much dangerous than dengue.

The Regional Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila confirmed that it was Chikungunya that was present in patients' blood samples.

“We received the result just last week and the RITM confirmed that the blood samples we sent to them showed that indeed chikungunya was behind the illness of our constituents in Mlang,” Sotea said.

Chikungunya mostly affects adults and may experience fever and joint pains as symptoms

Fogging operations and larvicide distribution were already made in affected areas.

Residents are also urged to keep the cleanliness in their homes, most specially, places where mosquitoes could live and reproduce.
