Teen Depression Isn't Always Like That

How do you picture a depressed kid? Are you seeing a kid cutting his wrist just to escape the pains? Are you seeing a loner who would rather stay in the dark corner of her room? These are the most stereotype things that people think when they hear the word "depression" but the truth is, not all depressed kids are like this. Most of the time, depressed kids just appear to be as normal as you are.

A depressed kid can be the topnotcher in class, the captain of the football team, the fangirl, or the art enthusiast. He can be the kid who enjoys watching basketball games, or the kid who is a die hard fan of a metal band. She can be the campus' most popular cheerleader, or the kid who has the sweetest smile.

They have friends just like you do. They don't always have to be bullied. They're just simple normal kids.

Apparently not all depressed kids cut themselves and not all depressed kids are alone. But at some point, these things are inside their heads.

As a kid who has been suffering depression for years and don't get help from experts or doctors, it is really tough to survive. It is tough to keep things to self and  what's worse is not being able to be heard even to the closest people. Most of the time we just find ways for ourselves.

Most depressed kids who don't get the right help suffers the same thing.

Most of the time, when depression hits, it doesn't have any reason at all. Most of the time this is much better than having a reason at all. It's like a roller coaster ride of emotions that just punch you in the chest anytime. Most of the time, it's just frustrating.

What's worse is when the people around you thinks that you're just going on a phase. No, depression is not some phase that someone goes through when he or she reaches the puberty stage. It doesn't select the person. It doesn't have a race, a religion, a social status, or a gender. It can hit anyone.

The only people that is supposed to understand this situation are the parents. But if parents already shut their minds to these things and would rather think that their kids are just wanting some attention then this will definitely lead to tragedy. Some parents even think that their kids are going crazy rather than trying to understand them.

Teens are having a hard time communicating with these stuffs, especially to parents. Sometimes friends aren't enough to talk to. That is why it is a must for parents to try to understand them as much as possible. Wait for them to open up and please don't tell them that they're crazy or lunatic. They just need someone to listen.

The age of social media is somewhat good for these kids, however, not all the time. Sometimes teens share their problems online and others who suffer the same situation can understand them. It's a good therapy since all they need is someone to talk to. The more someone can relate, the more the pressure was relieved.

But sometimes the social media itself preys on them. Remember, they're also vulnerable so be careful.

For those who can't seek help about this matter, the best thing you can do is try to face your depression and just simply embrace it. Denying the depression or the cause of depression will only make it worse.

Try to face it and try to see the most positive way to deal with it. Try to find something to do in order to divert your attention from it in a good way or use it to make something. Be creative. The depression will never leave you but if you find the right way to work on it, it'll be easy for you to get over it anytime it hits.

I know there are millions of people like me who's suffering the same thing and I know not all medications work. Sometimes the only solution is within ourselves. Never be afraid to speak up especially to the people closest to your heart. Please. Talk to someone and don't be afraid to cry.
