A group of inmates immediately busted out of a holding cell not to escape but to save the life of a Texas jailer who suddenly stopped breathing.
The inmates were in the basement of the Weatherford District Courts Building, awaiting court appearances, when the guard sitting outside their pen slumped onto the floor and stopped breathing.
According to Capt. Mark Arnett of the Parker County Sheriff's Office, the jailer was just talking to the inmates when he just "kind of collapsed."
The inmates started to yell as soon as the jailer went down but it didn't attract the attention of anyone upstairs. The inmates, all whom were shackled, broke out of their holding cell.
One of them grabbed the jailer's radio and tried to radio for help. As soon as deputies heard the commotion, they came down and called for emergency personally, who performed CPR on the jailer and used a defibrillator to shock his heart.
The entire incident was captured on video surveillance.
The jailer is healthy now and is returning to work on Monday, though the medical condition he has suffered hasn't been disclosed.
Arnett, however, praised the concerned inmates for their quick action. "They definitely saved his life," he said.
