San Miguel Corp to Construct a Bridge Connecting Boracay to Caticlan

In an effort to scale up its stake in Caticlan - the gateway to Boracay, conglomerate San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is planning to construct a 1.9-kilometer bridge that will connect the world-famous beach to the mainland in Caticlan.

With an estimated cost of $100 million (about P4.6 billion), SMC president Ramon S. Ang said that the infrastructure project would be up to the local government unit to award to a private sector partner.

“We proposed the idea for them to bid out. For us, it’s okay if there are other bidders" was Ang's statement.

If the project pushes through, the bridge will pave way to the decongestion of Boracay since tourists can find cheaper accomodations in Caticlan, Ang said. A backpacking tourist could get lodging in Caticlan for as low as P1,000 a night, which is relatively more affordable compared to accomodations in Boracay.

“We think what’s best is if everybody will stay and eat in Caticlan, go to Boracay to enjoy the beach,” Ang added, pointing out that this construction project would also help in sewerage problems on the island.

Founded in 1890, SMC is Southeast Asia's largest publicly listed food, beverage and packaging company as well as the Philippines' largest corporation in terms of revenue, with over 17,000 employees.
