Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada ordered on Monday to impose heavier penalties to violators of smoking ban in Manila.
"We will increase the fine up to P1, 000, or P2, 000 up to P3, 000 with imprisonment. May kasamang imprisonment from one day up to 10 days," warns Estrada.
The former president added that the 500-peso fine and two-day jail are not enough to control someone from smoking in prohibited places.
"Light up or you’ll get lit up,” he exclaimed.
Estrada apparently wants the issuance of Ordinance No. 7812, that will impose such an order, be in effect as soon as possible.
Estrada previously implemented smoking ban or the City Ordinance 7748 that prohibits smoking in hospitals, schools, public buildings, shopping malls, etc. within the city.
District 6 Councilor Casimiro Sison, author of the new ordinance, said that revisions on penalties is timely.
“It’s about time, lagi na lang binabalewala kasi there are a lot of ordinances regarding the banning of smoking but never been implemented kasi balewala ‘yung penalty,” Sison said.
The Manila City mayor apparently quits smoking after being hospitalized because of asthma attacks last December.
