President Rodrigo Duterte said that he don't want prayers, blessings and rituals from Catholic priests when he dies.
He added that he wanted to be buried 24 hours after his death.
Retired Archibishop Oscar Cruz, in behalf of the church, explained that it is the President's wish that should be respected.
In a statement on Monday, he added Duterte has freedom of religion as part of his human right.
“It is everybody’s option to embrace the religion they think is right … That is his prerogative and therefore must be respected,” Cruz added.
Funeral rites, in the Catholic tradition, includes a special mass to bless the dead for the remission of its sin.
