Baguio Eyes Declaring a Facebook User as 'Persona Non Grata' for Wishing the City to Experience a Killer Quake

People nowadays post just about anything on social media and some posts and comments can be very hurtful and annoying.

For instance, an upsetting comment on Facebook has been a discussion of Baguio City councilors. The aldermen are considering declaring a Facebook user, Jose Jinky O. Obejas, as persona non grata for wishing the city to experience another killer quake.

"Kung 7.5 degree ang temperatura sa Baguio sana magnitude 7.5 din ang dumating na lindol dyan,” Obejas said on Facebook.

The comment went viral at the peak of the cold season when the city was in the midst of temperatures reaching 7.3 degrees Celcius.

The City Council committee on laws, human rights and justice, and Councilors Maylen Yaranon, Bobby Ortega and Faustino Olowan deliberated a resolution to declare the personality as persona non grata for her ill thoughts for the summer capital of the Philippines.

The trouble with the resolution, however, was finding a valid address for Obejas. In addition, the verification of the person was raised since the comment was just posted on Facebook.

There is no valid address to send summons for Obejas. There is also no proof that the person exists.

The Facebook account of Obejas has since been deactivated after receiving damaging comments from angry netizens, both from Baguio City residents and non-residents alike.

In conclusion, the council calendared a summons for Obejas on March 27, even with no valid address to send the invitation to.

Baguio City officials are still to discuss whether to declare Obejas a persona non grata or simply an undesirable personality in the city.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan previously condemned the comments made by Obejas, saying a killer quake is not something to wish for by anyone for any place.
