Manila Under Threat of Greater Earthquake Than Surigao That Could Kill Thousands - PHIVOLCS

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warns residents of Manila and nearby areas anew from a possible earthquake that might be greater than the 6.7 magnitude experienced in Surigao del Norte.

The Big One- as it was famously known, was estimated to be 7.2 magnitude and is already "ripe for movement".

It was projected that areas of Quezon City, Marikina, Makati, Pasig, Taguig and Muntinlupa in Metro Manila; Bulacan; San Pedro, BiƱan, Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba in Laguna; and Carmona, General Mariano Alvarez and Silang in Cavite are the places where the 100-km West Valley Fault is situated.

They added that if an earthquake of that extent may hit a highly urbanized area, the devastation might be even greater.

“Everyone must learn from the recent effects of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao del Norte. If a similar event happens in a highly urbanized area, the effects can be more devastating,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said.

In a study in 2004, the most feared earthquake in the country may kill up to 34,000 people and injure 100,000 others.
