Fake accounts from social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram may soon be penalized once House Bill No. 5021 or “Social Media Regulation Act of 2017" will be passed into law.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez proposed the bill that seeks to "verify the identity of user applicants before they are allowed to open account.”
This also endeavors to conduct an inquiry to the alleged failure of social media networks to have a security system that could authenticate their active users.
The bill also pursues protection for many netizens from abuses like online identity theft.
If approved, imprisonment of six to 12 years and fines from P30,000 to P50,000 will be imposed to violators.
In 2016, 2,000 complaints of cybercrimes like online libel, online scam, online threats, identity theft, and cases of voyeurism has been recorded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti Cybercrime Group.
