CHED to Halt University Field Trips After Tanay Bus Tragedy

The Commission on Higer Education (CHED) on Tuesday announced that it will issue a moratorium on school field trips and educational tours at the wake of the bus accident in Tanay Rizal that killed 15 people, 14 of which are students.

The suspension covers all field trips and educational tours in all colleges and universities until the investigation is completed.

En route to a resort for an educational tour on Monday morning, a tourist bus carrying over 50 Bestlink Colleges students hit an electric post along a curved road in Brgy. Sampaloc in Tanay, killing 14 students and the bus driver.

"I will request the Commission en banc today to immediately issue a directive to all higher education institutions so we can properly investigate this tragedy and review current policies covering field trips," De Vera said in a press statement.

De Vera added that it needs to be determined whether education institutions are complying with safety guidelines and whether current policies on school trips protect the students adequately.

The commission has instructed Bestlink to submit an incident report immediately to determine of regulations were violated.

"The Tanay tragedy is a reminder that we must be very strict in regulating the use of public transport for school-sponsored trips," De Vera said.

He added that while educational tours are essential for students to learn, their safety is still the top priority.
