Adele Sweeps Grammys With 5 Wins, Pinoy Wins Best Musical Theater Album

English balladeer Adele took home 5 Grammys award last Sunday, including album, record and song of the year awards.

Beating her top rival Beyonce with her comeback album "25", Adele was able to repeat her accomplishment from 2012, when the British pop star also won album, song and record of the year at the Grammys.

In Adele's speech, she honored Beyonce and Beyonce's groundbreaking album "Lemonade."

“The way you make my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering,” Adele said at the Staples Center in Los Angeles when accepting album of the year.

“I adore you. You move my soul everyday … I adore you and I want you to be my mommy,” Adele said to a very pregnant Beyonce just minutes before picking up song of the year for “Hello.”

During the Grammys night, Adele worked overtime on stage with pop icon Bruno Mars, performing twice. Adele kicked off the show with "Hello" and Mars with his band gave a memorable performance of "That's What I Like" -- as some of their co-artists were looking impressed, including J. Lo, Rihanna and Faith Hill.

Meanwhile, Filipino Producer Jhett Tolentino won his first ever Grammy award for Best Musical Theater album for "The Color Purple."

Tolentino shares the award with his fellow producers Stephen Bray, Van Dean, Frank Filipetti, Roy Furman and Scott Sanders; composers Brenda Russel and Allee Willis; and principal soloists Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Hudson.

Jhet, wearing a red coat, accepted the award with the rest of the team.

“The Color Purple” is based on the 1982 novel of Alice Walker about an African-American woman Celie in the early 20th century.

Tolentino took to social media to announce their win. On his Facebook account, Jhett simply said “We just won a Grammy.” He also retweeted congratulatory messages from his friends and other celebrities.

“My thought on this new win is take inspiration to do more quality work. I would to extend the opportunity to Filipino businessmen, and I hope they’d be open to it,” he added.

This is not the first time that Tolentino had won a prestigious award. He previously won Tony awards for “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” (Best Musical); “A Raisin in the Sun” (Best Revival in a Play) and “Vanya And Sonia And Masha And Spike” (Best Play).

Broadway Records’ “The Color Purple” beat “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Kinky Boots,” “Waitress” and “Bright Star.”
