While US Basketball Readies for Rio, Popovich Preps for 2020

While Mike Kryzewski is working with his team as the current coach of the US basketball team, Gregg Popovich enters the gym with his own guys looking to play ball.

Kryzewski vs Popovich, a mega match up that would look really good to fire things up. However, this is just a practice game for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

And for 2020.

Popovich is getting an early start on his own Olympic preparations, scouting his own team from the young bloods to those who already belong to the current national team.

During practices this week, Popovich works with young players in one part of UNLV's basketball complex while Kryzewski and his staff put the national team through drills in another. But Popovich isn't just there to help the young guys. He's basically a behind-the-scenes assistant for Kryzewski.

Kryzewski is ending his run after Rio, one that started when Colangelo chose the Duke coach over Popovich when he started the national team program in 2005.

Popovich will start leading the Americans in the 2019 Basketball World Cup and then the Tokyo Games. And now, he's got four years to get ready.
