Boxing legend Muhammad Ali remain hospitalized for a second day Friday, June 3 for treatment for a respiratory ailment which was said been complicated by his Parkinson’s disease.
According to Ali’s spokesperson Bob Gunnell as told the Louisville Courier-Journal, the 74-year-old former heavyweight world champion remained in fair condition in the Phoenix area and that a brief stay was still expected. Gunnel, however, declined to give the newspaper in Ali’s hometown further details on the boxer’s condition.
The US gossip website radaronline.com quoted an anonymous source saying that Ali was on life support and that worried family members had gathered at his bedside. “Doctors are telling the family that it likely won’t be long until he passes away,’ quoted by the source.
Lance Pugmire of Los Angeles Times corroborated the report on Twitter, saying that an official told him “it could be hours” before Ali passes and that his condition was “very, very grave.”
Can confirm from very strong source that it's "very, very grave" for @MuhammadAli.— Lance Pugmire (@latimespugmire) June 3, 2016
Ali's family is at his bedside and I'm told "it could be hours" by official understandably sensitive to all involved.— Lance Pugmire (@latimespugmire) June 3, 2016
Gunnel, however, haven’t responded for
comments yet.
Ali, who is globally known for his
storied ring side career and also for his civil rights activism, has been
hospitalized multiple times in recent years, spending his time in the hospital
in 2014 after suffering mild case of pneumonia and again in 2015 for a urinary
tract infection.
His Parkinson’s, which is thought to
be caused by the thousand punches he took during his career, has limited his
public speaking for years.
Yet he continued to make appearances
and offer opinions through his family members and spokespeople. May not be able
to speak properly yet active enough to deal with events such as raising funds
for Parkinson’s treatment and dealing with issues like rebuking US presidential
hopeful Donald Trump over Trump’s call for a ban on Muslims entering the United
States.
Ali’s legendary boxing career
stretched from 1960 to 1981, dazzled his fans with slick moves in the ring, and
with his wit and engaging persona outside it.
