Centenarians to Receive P100K Under New Law

If you'd be healthy enough to live a hundred years, you'll be rewarded with P100,000 cash, according to a new law.

A week left into his term, then-president Benigno Aquino III signed into law a measure that will grant a P100,000 cash incentive and other benefits and privileges to Filipino centenarians.

Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians Act was approved by Aquino on June 23, according to Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, the measure's primary proponent in the House of Representative.

Under this unique law, all Filipinos who reach the age of 100 will receive a letter of felicitation from the President of the Philippines and a P100,000 cash gift. This includes those who are residing in the country or abroad.

The centenarians will also receive a plaque of recognition and more cash incentives from their respective city or municipality during National Respect for Centenarians Day, which is set on September 25 of every year.

Lagman said there are around 3,500 Filipino centenarians who will benefit from the enactment of the Centenarians Act

“I am especially excited for the 3,500 Filipino centenarians who will be conferred with the recognition they rightfully deserve and of course their P100,000.00 cash gift very soon,” Lagman said in a statement on Monday.

Lagman said he is grateful for Aquino for signing the law before he steps down on June 30, as Rodrigo Duterte assumes office. "Just in the nick of time. I must say it was really a long wait but it was worth the wait."

"On behalf of the co-authors of the Centennarians Act, I would like to hank our President for giving it the green light at last," he added.

Herminio Colomo Jr., then-Communications Secretary, said the RA 10868 was one of the four bills recently signed into law by Aquino.

The other three are RA 10865 or the Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center Act, RA 10866 or the Batanes Responsible Tourism Act, and RA 10867 or the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Reorganization and Modernization Act.

"The NBI Reorganization Act is product of inter-agency concensus building," Coloma said.

The said legislative proposal submitted to Congress sought to expand the structure, capability and manpower of the NBI to meet increasing demands for investigative work. It also intends to modernize the facilities and intelligence devices and establishment of forensic and scientific laboratories.

Batanas Responsible Tourism Act, on the other hand, had sought to ensure the development of toursim programs which are expected to generate employment and livelihood for Batanes province residents.
