Police in Lakeland, Florida are currently investigating after discovering an 8-foot alligator having a body in its mouth on Tuesday.

Members of the Lakeland Police Department recovered the body of a white male which appeared to have been in the water for more than a day.

Sgt. Gary Gross, who responded to the scene at Lake Hunters, confirmed that it is a body of a human being, saying that the gator “rolled a few times in the water then let go [of the body] and swam off.”

It is still unknown is the victim died from an alligator attack or by unrelated causes.

Last week, two fishermen discovered alligators eating a dead man in a South Florida canal.

Gross also explained that though the body could have been in water for days, that doesn't mean that it was caused by an alligator attack. He also added that since it’s mating season for alligators, it is possible that the animals are storing their food.

Detectives are currently combining the scene for anything that might help them identify the victim, and gator trappers dispatched to attempt to catch the animal and see the contents of its stomach for human remains.

However, according to Gross, there are no missing persons case in the area that matches the victim’s description so the investigation of the victim’s identity and cause and manner of death will be handled by the medical examiner.
