Paul Lee pulls out of Gilas due to knee injury

The Philippine national basketball team suffers another casualty.

Amid reports of wingman Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and center Greg Slaughter being out of Gilas pool due to injuries, the national team will also miss the services of prolific guard Paul Lee as he deals with a nagging knee injury.

Wearing casual outfit, the 27-year-old guard from Tondo personally approached the Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin during the team's morning practice to relay the bad news.

“Tinanong niya kung out daw ba ako sabi ko ‘yes, coach.’ Yun, out ako,” Lee told reporters. “Mag-skip talaga ako ngayon Gilas tapos sinabi niya na rin sa buong team para kahit papaano alam na rin ng buong team and makapag-prepare na ng maayos.”

Lee will likely miss the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July, which will take place in the Philippines.

"Malungkot para sa akin lalo na dito gagawin sa atin 'yung laro. Medyo masakit para sa akin na mag-skip ako ngayon," said Lee, who recently won the championship in the PBA Commissioner's Cup with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Lee said that a plasma treatment is required to heal the tear in his knee, and the recovery period will take five to six weeks.

Despite the unwanted development, Baldwin said the team needs to focus and prepare for the wild card tournament.

"There's nothing we can do about it. We just wish him (Lee) the best. He's a fallen brother and we hope he gets back on his feet as soon as possible," the coach said.
