If ever massive and destructive protest by communists and leftists popped out, President Rodrigo Duterte may declare a nationwide martial law next week.
“He said, if the left will try to have a massive protest, start fires on the streets, they will disrupt the country, then I might (declare martial law),” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
However, the defense chief emphasized that the chances of the said declaration is "remote" because as scheduled protests on Thursday next week would not be as big as organizers claim.
“But the president is indeed very concerned because it might get out of hand. So he said I might declare martial law.”
“Movement Against Tyranny,” a coalition of groups earlier announced that they will conduct protests on September 21, to commemorate the 45th year anniversary of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos imposing of Martial Law.
The said protest at Luneta Park would also stage opposition against Duterte’s war on drugs, attacks on democratic institutions, and outrage over Duterte’s public support for Marcos.
The theme of the protest will be: “Stop the Killings! Never Again to Tyranny and Dictatorship!”
It was just last May when he imposed Martial Law in Mindanao because of armed conflicts down there.
