La La Land thought they won Best Picture. They didn't.
In a shocking turn of events, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, stars of 1967's Bonnie and Clyde, announced the wrong best picture winner at the Oscars on Sunday.
Beatty explained that they read the wrong envelope, saying he saw that Emma Stone won for La La Land, who was actually the winner for Best Actress. Dunaway had read the winner before Beatty could stop her.
"I opened the envelope and it said 'Emma Stone, La La Land.' That's why I took such a long look at Faye, and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny," Beatty assured everyone, after admitting to the mistake and explaining that they had the wrong envelope.
The cast and crew of La La Land was already on the stage to give their acceptance speeches when the presenters announced the mixup. La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz informed viewers that the category's winner was actually Moonlight, and showed the card announcing the winner to the camera. He later explained that a stage hand flagged to him that they were given the wrong envelope.
Jimmy Kimmel came out to the stage to help work things out, joking that he blamed Steve Harvey for the error. "Guys, this is very unfortunate ... what happened. Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this.
