President Rodrigo Duterte said Kris Aquino asked him not to imprison her brother, former President Benigno Aquino III, over the Mamasapano incident.
“Kris texted, saying: ‘Huwag mo naman ipakulong si Noynoy (Please do not imprison Noynoy)',” Duterte said in a speech during the official launching of the Bureau of International Revenue’s Large Tax Service 2017 tax campaign at the Philippine International Convention Center, Monday.
Duterte's response was: "No, Kris. I am not out to find faults. I just want to know the truth. It could be nice to you, not be pleasing."
The President added that he wanted to know why not a single attack helicopter was deployed despite almost a day’s fighting between Special Action Force commandos and gunmen from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and private armed groups on January 25, 2015.
”I will not ask who committed mistakes. But there are so many things that have to be answered,” Duterte added.
Meanwhile, Duterte said he was no longer creating a commission to investigate the Mamasapano incident because he doesn't want to preempt the findings of the Office of the Ombudsman.
Duterte said he was not into the habit of sending to prison “the guys on the other side of the political fence or whatever.”
