Palawan to Build Nickelodeon Underwater Theme Park, Environmentalist Groups Oppose

After pronouncements from Nickelodeon, a known television channel for kids, about the construction of an underwater resort and theme park on Palawan, environmentalists and conservation groups were alarmed.

Green Peace, front liner in environmental conservation and protection, claimed that the project, which will be first in Asia, would destroy Palawan's paradisiacal scenery.

The 400-hectare underwater venture aims to showcase Palawan's rich marine biodiversity along with their famous brand and iconic characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, etc.

Vince Cinches of Green Peace Southeast Asia expressed disbelief as on how a theme park that big will promote 'environmental protection.'

Palawan, tagged as Philippines' last frontier, was chosen being a home for the most beautiful beaches in the world, including spectacular coastal areas and forests.

UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the famous Subterranean River and Tubbataha coral reefs are both situated in Palawan.

Ron Johnson, executive vice president of Viacom International Media Networks, owner of Nickelodeon, said that the project that will open in 2020 would 'advocate ocean protection.'

Coral World Park, Viacom's partner to the Philippines said that precautionary measures will be employed to keep the rich biodiversity of the place safe from harm.

The envisioned theme park that will feature restaurants and lounges 20 feet below sea level still waits for approval.
