After the leaked emails of the supposed plans of supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo to create dissent against President Rodrigo Duterte became a social media sensation, MalacaƱang finally decides to look into it.
According to Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, the Palace is taking the matter seriously but would not pass judgment until the information contained in the emails have been validated.
"It has really become a national issue," said Andanar, adding that he and National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. are really concerned about it.
Asked if Robredo was part of the email conversations, Andanar denied that allegation as there was no indication that she was part of it, adding that it was too early to tell whether Robredo was part of the plot to undermine the President.
The emails, dubbed as "Lenileaks" because of the supposed involvement of people from the Office of the Vice President, contained conversations about rallies calling for Duterte's resignation and mass actions against his decision to allow the burial of former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
The email messages also discussed efforts to mobilize schools, priests and nuns against the President.
Also, it was stated there that the anti-Duterte rallies were supposedly organized to prevent a plot to oust Robredo from office.
Among those who were allegedly behind those emails were billionaire philanthropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis, her sister, former Commission on Filipino Overseas chairperson Imelda Nicolas and lawyer Ted Laguatan.
Robredo has not made any statement about the issue, but already said in an earlier interview that plotting to oust the President would not be good for the country.
Though Andanar thanked Robredo for the statement, he also stressed that she has the "moral authority" to talk to her supporters who are creating noise online.
He also urged those people mentioned in the emails to explain themselves to the public to settle the issue.
Last month, President Duterte asked Robredo to desist from attending the Cabinet meetings, prompting her to resign as housing chief. It was then followed by the President's claim that "yellows" or people associated with opposition want to oust him because they cannot accept the electoral defeat.
