MMFF Entry 'Oro' to Face Charges on Animal Cruelty over Dog Slaughter

2016 Metro Manila Film Festival entry 'Oro' is set to face a complaint filed by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) regarding the highly controversial dog slaughter scene featured in the movie.

The film allegedly violated Section 6 and 9 of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 (Republic Act No. 8485), owing them to face two to 3 years in prison and a fine of up to Php 250,000 if found guilty.

Sought in the said complaint is the team behind this year's Best Ensemble Cast, led by director Alvin Yapan, production manager Arianne Dulay, and producers Mark Shandii Bacolod and Jane Bondoc Gonzales.

It was a week ago when PAWS conducted discussion with MMFF Execom and the production team of the film before they filed the complaint yesterday, January 11 at the Office of the Pasig City Prosecutor.

Complainants were represented by PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera, MMFF marketing committee member Ida Tiongson, Oro cast member Japo Parcero, and PAWS' Jam Casaul.

Yapan, together with MMFF Best Actress Irma Adlawan, insisted that the production team didn't kill any dog, instead of, just filmed a culture that just happened within their stay in the area.

Oro tackles a massacre in a mining community.

The controversy has already disowned the film of their MMFF Fernando Poe Jr Memorial Award, has been pulled out of theater and has been suspended in the festival for a year.
