CDO Under State of Calamity Due to Floods: 7 Reported Deaths, 2 Missing, 30 Injured


Residents of Cagayan de Oro and nearby cities in Region 10 have been experiencing dilapidating flood caused by a month's volume of rain of the tail end of a cold front and a low pressure area (LPA) unleashed in just one day.



At least seven reported deaths, two were missing and more than 30 persons were injured in the flood which has also resulted in forced evacuation of thousand of surprised residents.

Supt. Surki Serenas, spokesman of the Northern Mindanao regional police said that three areas - Iligan City, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte - are also greatly affected and are likely to be in a state of calamity. CDO was hit the hardest.

“But it is only CDO which is officially declared under state of calamity. Those areas were hit by flooding but it is CDO which was hit the hardest,” said Serenas.

Classes at the pre-school, elementary and high school levels across Misamis Oriental were suspended on Tuesday by Governor Yevgeny Vincent Emano.



The state weather bureau Pagasa explained he LPA east-northeast of Zamboanga City has dissipated but the tail-end of a cold front will continue to bring cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Visayas, Northern Mindanao and the Caraga region. People are being warned of possible flashfloods and even landslides.

Roads Passable

CDO weather condition has improved but some areas are still flooded, according to Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator Ricardo B. Jalad. Roads are passable.

Almost 7,000 individuals of over 1,600 families already returned to their homes out of the 12,452 individuals of 3,000 families.



The casualties were identified as: 3-year-old Jaime Chan of Barangay Awang; 54-year-old Nilo Quiloman of Barangay Santiago in Gingoog City; 10-year-old Kian Montecino of Barangay Awang; 7-year-old CJ Lapuz of Barangay Mahayahay, Magsaysay; 14-year-old Renny Boy Cabido of Upper Zone 3, Barangay Agusan; and an unidentified person from Barangay Balulang.

A certain Abel Uana from Medina town is still missing.

9,000 Food Packs

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said it is closely monitoring the situation of families displaced by flashfloods and landslides in CDO, Misamis Oriental and Iligan, Lanao del Norte and are set to airlift 9,000 family food packs, 2,000 dignity kits, 5,000 blankets and 5,000 ready-to-eat Chicken Arroz Caldo to its field office in Northern Mindanao.

A standby fund of P7 million has also been allocated.
