The Miss Universe head defended Pia Wurtzbach from critics of her work as the reigning queen, praising the Filipina beauty’s dedication to fulfill her duties.
“She will just always go above and beyond. When we’re tired or when we’re about to leave, she is still standing there looking amazing, still saying words of encouragement. So, just in general, she’s been great,” Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart told ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe.
Last November, Wurtzbach shot back at critics who said she has not done anything to find a “cure” for HIV/AIDS.
“Just to get some things straight. I haven’t forgotten about my advocacy, ok? I’m so tired of people complaining that I haven’t found ‘the cure’ for HIV when clearly I said I would raise awareness. I’m not magically gonna come up with a potion that cures everything,” Wurtzbach said in the caption of an Instagram photo of her in a bikini.
Shugart also shared how passionate and hardworking Wurtzbach is: “She is the person that without any sleep, or if she doesn’t feel well, she will be there and take a photo with every single person in the room, with every child in a hospital.”
And for those qualities, Shugart said, she will miss the 27-year-old beauty who will be “giving up” the crown next year.
“Pia’s just amazing…she really is. She’s confidently beautiful with a heart, she’s so passionate, and she gives so much,” she stated, referencing Wurtzbach’s winning answer in the 2015 pageant.
Shugart, Wurtzbach and 11 other Miss Universe 2016 candidates are in the Philippines to promote the pageant set for January 30, 2017.
Shugart said she is “really excited” to finally stage the prestigious pageant in the country after 22 years.
