Brazil's Suspended President 'Sad' to Miss Rio Opening

Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff said she was "sad" for not being able to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Rousseff was charged of breaking budget laws and was suspended from office in May pending her trial by the Senate. She turned down the invitation for the opening ceremony last month, saying that she'll only play as a second fiddle to interim President Michel Temer, who declared the Games open.

However, she still expressed her support on Twitter, writing "sad not to be party 'live and in color' but I will be following it, rooting for Brazil."

Temer, her former vice president, took over in mid-May when Rousseff was sent for the Senate.

Rousseff, who insisted to be innocent, is expected to be dismissed from office in a final hearing at the end of the month.
