It should come no surprise to everybody that Gilas Pilipinas will always be the smaller guys all throughout in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Which is exactly why Gilas deputy coach Norman Black emphasized just how important it is for the national team to make three-point shots.
The former PBA Grandslam champion believes that every opponent Filipinos will be facing will be giving them a lot of open looks from afar.
"Being very tall, I think all of them will be willing to take a risk on that (Gilas making the three-point shots)," Black explained in an interview after the loss to Turkey in a tuneup game.
"They know that they will beat us underneath because of their size. That’s why we need to make the three-point shot to have a chance."
In that loss against Turkey, Gilas only shot a horrendous 9-27 clip at the three-point range, but still managed to keep on the Turks' tails.
Imagine if the Filipinos can consistently make the long range bombs.
Gilas opens its OQT bid against France at 9 p.m. today, marking the second time in two years that the Filipinos will be clashing with the formidable French.
Two years ago, the national team gave France all that it could handle before clinching a hard-fought 75-68 victory in a practice game.
The Filipinos converted 12 triples that made the game close.
So in order for the Filipinos to score the major upset, they must live and die with the three-point shot.
