'Star Trek' Gets Its First LGBTQ Character

John Cho's character will come out of the closet in this month's 'Star Trek Beyond.'

The long-lived sci-fi franchise is boldly going for a big revelation on Hikaru Sulu's character -- the helmsman of the Starship Enterprise played by John Cho -- as gay.

Sulu's becoming as first LGBTQ lead character in Star Trek history arrives just in time for the franchise's half-century anniversary. In this series, it will be revealed that Sulu is not only in a committed relationship with another man, but also have two daughter together.

Though the Sulu of the original TV series, played by George Takei from 1966 to 1991, was depicted as straight, the current changes were inspired by Takei who came out in 2005.

Although the franchise has featured guest characters who have hinted at same-sex relationships on screen, Sulu will serve as the first canonically LGBTQ characters in the series -- but with the movie series likely to continue beyond Beyond and a new TV series launching next year.

Star Trek Beyond opens July 22.
