A team of young Filipino students, between Grade 8 and Grade 10, recently won five medals in an international math competition in Romania.
The team composed of six students brought home one gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the 20th Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO) held in Slatina, Romania, from June 24 to 29.
Andres Rico Gonzales III, a Grade 9 student of Colegio de San Juan, bagged the gold medal and was the highest scorer among the 10 guest countries, according to Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG) Philippines.
Meanwhile, Ryan Mark Shao, a Grade 10 student of Xavier School won the silver medal.
The bronze medalists, on the other hand, include Grade 9 student Steve Marcus Ong and Grade 8 student Steven Reyes both of St. June Catholic School, and Grade 9 student Dion Stephan Ong of Ateneo de Manila Junior High School. William Joshua King of Bethany Christian School completes the Philippine team of six math wizzes.
The MTG said they are dedicating their victory to President Rodrigo Duterte, who recently took his oath on Thursday.
“This is the first international math contest that Filipino kids have joined this year and they are set to compete in other competitions abroad. We dedicate our first triumph to President Rodrigo Duterte who will lead us in the next six years,” MTG president Dr. Isidro Aguilar said.
This years JBMO, which had a total of 120 participants clustered into 20 teams, was organized by the Romanian mathematical Society under the auspices of the Romanian Ministry of National Education.
Among the competing Balkan countries include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and Romania.
Aside from the Philippines, other guest countries were Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia, France, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Alutus.
The Philippine lineup was under the leadership Zheng Rong Wu, a medalist of several international math contests himself, and was coached and trained by the following MTG elite group: Kirish Villegas, Renard Eric Chua, Gari Lincoln Chua and of course Zheng Rong Wu.
