Marqus Blakely Feels At Home Under Jason Webb's Free-Flowing System

Being a vital cog to Tim Cone's vaunted triangle, Star Hotshots' long-time import Marqus Blakely admits feeling better under the free-flowing run-and-gun offense that current head coach Jason Webb employs.

The former best import awardee will be serving his 4th tour of duty to the franchise and in just a couple of weeks practice he readily says he likes this offense under Webb better.

"Offensively, here, (I like it better) for sure, just because it’s a little bit more free flowing in transition," Blakely told in an interview after their tune-up game against NLEX. "But I’m a cerebral player too, so the Triangle played a huge part in us winning. But at the same time, it’s our teammates, too."

Blakely adds, "The triangle is a five-guy offense whereas here, we have a lot of pick-and-rolls, two-man games, and spreading the floor, so it’s two different types."

The energetic reinforcement also expects to put up better numbers under coach Webb, "I’d say this (system) caters to my offense better. With this type of offense, we put up more points. We’re a very transitional team and we’re able to get out on the open floor and get some shots up, getting a lot of threes up."

But the import still preached defense if they want to be successful.

"But at the same time, we can’t let that affect us on the defensive end because when coach Tim was here, that was one thing he preached: day in and day out, we’re going to win with our defense and rebounding – and we did; it’s a proven theory," Blakely explains. "We can’t get too distracted on offense and not focus on defense."

Blakely flexed his guns in Jason Webb's system by towing past the Road Warriors in the tune-up game with 17 points.

"My game hasn’t changed too much, but getting older, you understand and you think the game more than just run around and play the game," the 27-year-old cager said.

"And I think knowing your personnel, knowing my teammates … there’s maybe two or three people that are new, everybody else I know, so just incorporating and saying that, ‘hey, now we can take the next step in understanding each other as players on offense or defense, what I could do for you or how you could help me.’"
