Native Cherry Blossoms Park Soon in Puerto Princesa

The city of Puerto Princesa is planning to build a park flaunting Palawan cherry blossoms that will resemble Japan's famous sakura gardens.

It will be called "Balayong Park" after the local name of the cherry blossom tree, Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron said on Monday. The Palawan endemic trees will be planted at the Palawan Sports Complex and surrounding areas, he said.

“Kung mapupuno natin ng mga balayong trees 'yan, pag namulaklak, magiging maganda sa paningin,” Bayron said.

In full bloom, the balayong trees boast a mixture of light pink and white flowers.

Bayron said the local government may have to relocate existing balayong trees in the city to make sure the park will have enough balayong trees in full bloom.

Part of the local government's plan to boost tourism in the city, Bayron said the Balayong Park will be constructed during his term. He said his team is still studying the project.

The first-ever Sakura Park in the Philippines is set to open in Atok, Benguet.

This received concerns from netizens voicing out that we ought to cultivate our own since we have native trees which are just as beautiful as the Japanese cherry blossoms.
