Miss Teen USA Drops the Swimsuit Competition

Going conservative? Next Miss Teen USA pageant won't be having swimsuit competitions anymore, as Miss Universe Organization finally drops the staple competition of beauty pageants for almost 100 years.

This makes sense, considering that the main purpose of the pageant is to award scholarship money. This is also not surprising at all since most of the contestants are ranging from 14 to 19 years old.

As a matter of fact, it is already weird for them to have the swimsuit competition before, especially for minor contestants. Though not all participants are required to wear bikinis.

After fielding criticisms for objectifying young women, the Miss Universe organization decided to just replace that segment with an athletic wear competition.

Year after year, contestants for Miss USA, Miss Universe, Miss America and countless other pageants at every level have featured dozens of women wearing swimsuits. It is already a widely accepted and most anticipated portion of the pageant.

Though wearing swimsuits are not so rare to see on women of any age when it comes to beaches, Miss America still holds on to their platform that they're all about education, female empowerment and sisterhood. And that, there's no need for these girls to show some skin in the pageant.

"This decision reflects an important cultural shift we’re all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," said Miss Universe president Paula Shugart.
