Duterte Administration to Build More Bridges and Flyovers

Incoming DPWH Secretary Mark Villar

Incoming president Rodrigo Duterte plans to build more flyovers and bridges in Metro Manila over the next two to three years to aide in the traffic crisis in the capital, Mark Villar, incoming Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary, told reporters.

According to Villar, the projects include a bridge connecting Fort Bonifacio business district and Kapitolyo in Pasig to divert traffic from EDSA and C5.

Constructing an additional flyover in Katipunan, Quezon City is also being considered.

Projects started by the outgoing administration will also be completed, the incoming secretary said. These include a toll road to Ninoy Aquino International Airport and a road connecting North and South Luzon Expressways.

"It's very doable. I think before, there were some issues on underspending. It's just a matter of picking the right projects that have easier right of way, that are faster to implement," Villar said on Tuesday.

"We hope we can implement them sooner (rather) than later," he added.

As recently reported, Duterte will ask the Congress to grant him sweeping powers to solve traffic congestion in the capital city of 12 million people.

These include opening private subdivisions to traffic, doing away with public biddings for some projects and removing public markets and transportation terminals from major roads, incoming Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said.
