Five containers of C2 green tea and energy drink products of Universal Robina Corporation unit of Vietnam (URC Vietnam) have been suspended from retailing in Vietnam due to excessive amounts of lead, according to the Ministry of Health of Vietnam.
According to Nguyen Van Nhien, deputy chief inspector of the Health Ministry, of two sample batches conducted in January and April 2016, C2 lemon-flavored green tea produced 0.46 mg/l and 0.085 mg/l, respectively. The lead content in each is higher than the allowable level of 0.05 mg/l, according to the deputy chief inspector.
The Health Ministry's inspectorate advised URC Vietnam to submit a report about the number of its beverages produced and sold and requested it to recall them for further testing. The inspectorate will continue monitoring food safety issues at URC Vietnam. This includes looking into ingredients, additives and detergents used in the beverage production.
The test report of the National Institute of Food Control was spread on social media, stating that the lead content in the sample of citric acid used by URC Vietnam contained 0.84 mg/kg, higher that the allowable level of 0.5 mg/kg. URC Vietnam representative told a Vietnamese news website Tuoi Tre News that they're suspecting their competitors trying to disrupt their business.
URC is among the largest beverage makers in the Philippines. Its Vietnamese unit is one of the four major beverage companies that will undergo a comprehensive review by the health ministry this year. The other three companies are Coca-Cola Vietnam. Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam and Wonderfarm.
