Brexit: A Historic Divorce

Britain has voted to leave the European Union followed by Prime Minister David Cameron's resignation.


Brexit is an abbreviation of "British exit" which refers to the possibility of Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.

Britan has voted to leave the European Union in a referendum, with results throwing into questioning the fate of the 28-nation bloc. 

Prime Minister David Cameron announce that he will step down by October, said the British people made "a very clear decision to take a different path."

The official results were announced on Friday with the Leave campaign receiving 52 percent in historic referendum with at least 72 percent of 46.5 million voters turned out to cast their ballot.

"Let June 23 go down in history as our Independence Day," said Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), who delivered the victory speech in London as a Brexit victory.

According to Barnaby Philips of Aljazeera, the outcome is "an enormous rejection of the political class." There is anger towards the political class.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond also told Aljazeera that UK's exit would diminish Britain's global voice.
