Abueva accepts Gilas cut, insists giving his all

Fans were left wondering why Alaska Aces scrappy bruiser Calvin Abueva didn't make the Gilas' final 12 roster.

But for "The Beast" himself, he already accepted national team head coach Tab Baldwin's verdict without rancour, sporting a neutral expression in his face.

Abueva bared with his family and Alaska crew that everything is just "part of the job" after stressing he feels alright.

"It’s part of the job, sis," CK Kanapi-Daniolco, Alaska’s sports development and PR manager, quoted their franchise player as saying.

Abueva adds, "Ginawa ko naman lahat at hindi ko desisyon na matanggal ako."

A couple of PBA coaches who refused to be named agreed on one thing why Abueva missed the cut, citing that he is "too small for the position" that he plays.

"In the PBA, and maybe even in the Asian level, Calvin can play the ‘three’ and go up against players who are a little bigger," said one of the coaches, who declined to be named.

The coach adds, "But at the Olympic level, those who man that position are easily 6-7, 6-8 or even bigger."

The other coach says that for Abueva's size, he should be able to man the point in the tournament.

Aside from Abueva, another undersized guard, LA Tenorio, failed to make the cut.

Now a man with something to prove, Abueva vows to Alaska management to help the Aces in their quest for the franchise's 15th championship when the PBA Governors’ Cup begins tentatively on July 15.
