Camarines Sur 3rd District representative and vice presidentiable Leni Robredo topped the count of vice presidential votes during the first day of canvassing in Congress on Wednesday, May 25.
Robredo has 3,576,643 votes while her closest rival, Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr has 3,281,151 votes, based on the partial, official tally by Congress sitting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC).
Robredo’s lead over Marcos is 295,492 votes as of Wednesday evening.
The legal counsel of Marcos, George Erwin Garcia, criticized the voter turnout for the vice president, saying that it’s too low compared to the voter turnout for the country’s top post. Garcia questioned, "How come there’s about 600,000 ‘undervote’ for the vice presidential post?"
However, Romulo Macalintal, legal counsel of Robredo, explained that people can skip from voting a vice president, saying that ‘undervote’ is common. He said, "People have the freedom to abstain from voting a certain post. The public must not think that this is a sign of cheating". "This is only a trick of the Marcos’ camp to make people think that cheating happened," Macalintal added.
Here are the other VP candidates: Allan Peter Cayetano got 1,457,495 votes; Francis “Chiz” Escudero received 1,491,267 votes; Gringo Honasan garnered 196,006 votes; and Antonio Trillanes IV got 205,952 votes. Forty-five election returns were canvassed yesterday by the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) in the House of Representatives.
