Business magnate John Gokongwei has sold around $250 million (P11 billion) worth of shares in his listed conglomerate JG Summit Holdings, Incorporated, as part of estate planning.
JG Summit senior vice president Bach Johann Sebastian confirmed in a text message that the conglomerate sold 142.5 million secondary shares owned by Gokongwei via overnight placement of shares.
"Selling shareholder was Mr. John Gokongwei. Sale was for estate planning purposes," Sebastian said.
The shares were sold at P82.10 per share, a 9.7% discount on the P92.10 close on Wednesday.
As a result, share price of JG Summit dropped as low at P82.50 per share before closing at P82.40 apiece.
UBS was the underwriter for this transaction.
After the transaction, Gokongwei, who sits as chairman emeritus of JG Summit, remained with 58 million direct shares in the conglomerate.
In the first quarter of the year, JG Summit enjoyed a 60.9% increase in first quarter profits to P9.63 billion from P5.98 billion, behind income growth of its airline and petrochemical businesses.
Consolidated revenues grew 6.2% to P60.59 billion from P57.05 billion to P60.59 billion via core subsidiaries' performances.
However, the revenues from core investments declined this period compared to same period last year as dividend income received by the group dropped 34.6% to P1.03 billion from P1.57 billion. This is due to lower dividends declared by PLDT for the period.
For 2016, JG Summit has allocated P41.3 billion in capital expediters primarily to support capacity expansion of its food manufacturing unit, building of new malls, offices, hotels, and residential projects of its property unit, and fleet expansion of its airline business.
For the first quarter of the year, the group spent P11.1 billion in capital expenditures.
JG Summit is one of the powerhouse conglomerates in the Philippines, having finances in food and beverage, real estate, air transportation, financial services, petrochemicals, telecommunications, and power distribution.
Among JG Summit subsidiaries are JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation; CP Air Holdings, Incorporated; Universal Robina Corporation; Robinsons Land Corporation; and Robinsons Bank Corporation.
The company also holds 8% interest in the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and 27.1% interest in Manila Electric.
