Gilas cadets swept the elimination round of the 2016 SEABA Stankovic Cup after surviving Thailand in a 66-65 nail-biter at Stadium 29 in Bangkok in what could be a preview of the gold medal game on Sunday.
Troy Rosario led the Gilas attack with a double-double effort of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Mac Belo added 18 points to go along with 7 boards.
It was not the prettiest games of Gilas though, as they only shot a horrid 3-37 clip from beyond the arc that allowed the Thais to mount comebacks.
Gilas led by as much as 11 in the first canto, then held a nine-point edge 58-49 with 7:35 left in the fourth before Thailand rallied to take the lead 63-60 with 2:08 left in the regulation.
But despite the paltry shooting, the Gilas made two of those three 3's that mattered the most, courtesy of Mike Tolomia and Kevin Ferrer that gave them the lead back, 66-63 with 1:02 left.
Chitchai Ananti of Thailand scored a layup with 47 seconds to go to trim the deficit to one, but the Philippine team's tight defense forced a costly turnover with 1.6 seconds remaining.
Thais got the ball back, only for Ananti's halfcourt heave to miss that sealed the deal for Gilas.
