Japan Princess Willing to Lose Royal Status to Marry a Commoner

Princess Mako of Japan announced on Sunday her engagement to a commoner fiancĂ© despite a law that will remove her royal status as a princess after their marriage.

All female members of the imperial family shall forfeit their royalty upon marriage to a commoner.

Princess Mako is the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito

In her announcement, she expressed that she is "really happy" with her engagement to Kei Komuro, 25.

Komuro works for a law firm and was once crowned as the  "Prince of the Sea" in a tourism promotion contest.

It was already three years ago when the commoner proposed to the Princess.

"I was aware since my childhood that I'll leave a royal status once I marry," Princess Mako said in the televised press conference.

The princess described his smile was "like the sun" while he decribed Mako as someone who quietly watches over him "like the moon".

Their wedding will take place after the summer of 2018.

Mako, 25, is the eldest daughter of Prince Akishino, Akihito's second son.

Apparently, the law which will be removing her royal status upon marriage inequally does not apply to male royals.
