President Rodrigo Duterte fires National Irrigation Agency administrator Peter Tiu Laviña for allegedly receiving 40% kickback from agency's projects.
The President told labor leaders on Monday that Laviña was removed from his post to curb corruption under his administration, said Sonny Matula, Federation of Free Workers (FFW) president.
Matula added that Duterte means business against corruption and he takes seriously his commitment in his campaign.
It was already two days ago when Laviña was fired but on Wednesday, however, now ex-NIA Chief claimed that he resigned to spare the President from embarrassment.
"To spare the President from these embarrassing stories, particularly in these times of intensified attacks on him, I have quietly left government. I have neither personal vested interest in it nor ill intent towards NIA and the whole government, which we are trying to reform," Laviña posted in Facebook.
Laviña is Duterte's spokesperson during his bid in May 2016 national election.
