Transgender Lawmaker Wants to Join Military; AFP Welcomes Application

The country's first transgender legislator expressed intent to join the military as an officer of the reserved force.

Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman on Thursday said that she is interested to apply as a reservist to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

She added that she wanted to know how welcoming the national defense is to members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community.

Roman also wanted to show that LGBT members is not limited from being military professionals to show their love for the country.

As a transgender woman, she said that she would wear haircut and uniform for female officers.

AFP welcomes Roman to the armed forces, along with other members of the LGBT community who have interest to protect the country.

In a statement, they added that they do not discriminate their applicants in terms of gender.

“The AFP welcomes the expressed interest of Rep. Roman. We highly value the patriotism of our citizens and will work to cultivate this. She will be a welcome addition to the reservists force,” it said.

A conservative organization as they are, they still want to remind applicants that they will not disregard the value of their uniform, dignity and discipline.

Roman replied in another statement that she commends the organization for being open to the LGBT community.

“Change is truly happening in our country now as promised by President Duterte,” the lawmaker said as she thanked Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and AFP Chief Gen. Eduardo Año.
