Why Gloria Diaz Got Bashed for Her Top 5 Miss Universe Pick [VIDEO INCLUDED]

In an interview with Karen Davila on ANC's Headstart, 1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz picks her top five.

Diaz is not part of the panel of judges for this year's Miss Universe competition but being the very first from the Philippines to win the crown, people want to know of her choices.

She named the following contestants for her top five:

  • Miss Canada
  • Miss Venezuela
  • Miss Dominican Republic
  • Miss Thailand
  • Miss China

Asked about Miss Philippines, she said that Maxine Medina will not be a winner.

"She cannot nga be the winner. She can be first runner-up. I hope I’m proven wrong for the first time in my life. I want her to win. I want us to be so proud, but you know, that’s life," she said.

"We are the host. The host country cannot [win]. I cannot serve lechon and bring it back to my kitchen kasi I’m giving it to you," she added.

She also said Medina's inclusion in the competition would only be a "saling pusa" but she stressed that she could be a top contender for the title.

As for Miss Canada, she said she's part of her list only if she would lose some weight.

"If Canada could lose 8 pounds, I love her face. Am I right? She’s beautiful," she said

Netizens React

Netizens were too quick to react to Diaz's rather harsh views about Miss Canada and our own contender, Miss Philippines.

A netizen on Facebook, commented "Gloria Diaz, you need 8 pounds of brain," throwing back her remarks to Miss Canada's need to lose weight. This sentiment apparently was shared by several other netizens, with 1,246 likes.

Another netizen quipped: "Shame on u Gloria Diaz! The more u talk the more you mess up. You were Miss Universe you should know the facts."

Another comment Diaz received from someone from California reads: "Hey Gloria Diaz! You are absolutely embarrassing the Philippines! To say that Miss Canada should lose weight (8lbs) makes you a very superficial person. It is also very degrading to women (your comment). Then top that off that Miss Philippines can't win because they're the host country? You are DELUSIONAL, Gloria!"

Since the release of her interview with Karen Davila, she has received several other cirticisms.

However, some still believe that she is after all qualified to her opinion.

Diaz Clarifies

Earlier, Diaz explained that she's not undermining Medina, though she said she has a "one in a million" chance of getting a back-to-back win for the country.

"There is no way that I'm undermining her. People are criticizing her for her English... It got nothing to do with it. Buti nga mag-Tagalog siya, hindi ba? O English o Chavacano, I don't want to be taken out of context," she said.

"We are the host country. We are here to choose a winner, it will be so strange if our own girl will win," she explained.
