Uson Vows to Stop Soft Porn on Primetime TV

From being a dancer-slash-entertainer, to a controversial blogger, to Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) ambassador, to now a board member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), Mocha Uson's political career was something she never imagined.

As part of the regulating agency of what viewers watch on film and television, Uson's first official statement, released via social media, was a promise not to accept salary for her work in the MTRCB as a board member.

"Tinanggap ko po itong pagiging board [membe] ng MTRCB sa kondisyon na wala po akong tatanggaping sweldo," Uson said in a Facebook post Friday.

[I accepted the post as MTRCB board member on the condition that I will not accept any salary.]

In case the board would insist on giving her salary, all the money would be donated to Duterte's Kitchen - an organization that feeds street children - and to projects of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Uson said.

"I'm not after the compensation here I'm not after the salary or the money, I just want to help this administration to bring change in our country," Uson said in an interview with CNN Philippines.

Uson said she was saddened yet challenged that other artists refused to accept the post because of the meager salary. She said she does not have any idea on the exact amount.

To her bashers, an unfazed Uson said she has been in the entertainment industry for a decade now and had starred in independent and mainstream movies.

Presidential Decree 1986, the same decree which created the MTRCB, states that at least 15 members of the board "may come from the movie and television industry."

Uson's pledge to "help bring change to the MTRCB,"  following President Duterte's "change is coming" slogan, brought her to her first mission in the bureau: To get rid of soft-core pornography in the television shows airing during primetime.

According to Uson, sex scenes on TV are "getting out of control."

"Alam kong mahirap dahil isa lang po ako at madami ang board members ngunit pipilitin natin ma convince ang board na hindi tama na ipalabas ito sa oras kung saan makakapanood ang bata," Uson said.

[I know it's hard because I am only one against my other board members but I will convince them not to allow its airing at times when children could be watching.]

As a board member, Uson is tasked to be part of a sub-committee that reviews movies or programs and either recommends or disapproves them for public viewing. The entire board approves the recommendations.

Uson said she will not promote obsenity, which is contrary to what critics expect from her. At least a couple of uploaded images and videos on social media contradicts this.

Duterte appointed Uson on December 28 of last year, for a term which will expire on Septemer 30 of this year.
