Why WWF Proclaimed Sta. Rosa as PH’s Earth Hour Capital

Santa Rosa city in Laguna has been named the "RP's Earth Hour Capital" by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) with its Earth Hour City Challange.

The Enchanted Kingdom city also placed fifth in WWF's "We Love Cities" campaign, a contest conducted on social media wherein Bogor city in Indonesia won fist place.

According to a statement from WWF, "Santa Rosa City in Laguna has initiatives ranging from the erection of solar street lights to the construction of a composting facility designed to minimize landfill waste."

The Southern Luzon city will be recognized in October in Quito, Ecuador, together with Paris, which is proclaimed 2016 Global Earth Hour Capital.

Meanwhile, two other cities in the country were also awarded in the We Love Cities competition.

San Carlos city in Negros Occidental, placing 4th spot in the contest, has positioned itself as "the emerging Renewal Energy Hub of Asia," hosting two solar parks, a bioethanol and a biomass power plant.

Makati city in the National Capital Region, winning 19th place, has been providing barangay officials with basic knowledge and design skills for eco-friendly projects promoting cultural identity.

The Earth Hour City Challenge, which was started in 2011, is a yearly global program which aims to recognize cities that are implementing environment-friendly and energy-efficient programs.

Seven cities in the Philippines joined in August 2015. These include Cagayan de Oro, Makati, Naga, Parañaque, San Carlos, Santa Rosa and Quezon City. There was a total of 124 cities that joined the 2015-2016 challenge from around the world.

“Each of our seven cities is a winner. We want to promote their solutions to hasten the transformation of our own urban hubs into eco-friendly, stress-free and low-carbon living spaces. Traffic, smog and garbage don’t have to be our daily realities. We can make our cities more livable and sustainable,” said Atty. Gia Ibay, Earth Hour Philippines Director.

The Philippine office of the WWF would be recognizing the three finalist cities on August 12 in Manila.

WWF-Philippines ran the We Love Cities Campaign from May 13 to June 26.
